Welland Guilty Plea
November 27, 2015
WELLAND, ON - In July of 2015, a member of the public reported to the Welland & District SPCA that they had observed a man repeatedly kick a small dog and drag it back into a home. An investigation conducted by the Welland & District SPCA determined these allegations to be knowingly false.
As a result, a 17-year-old youth, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged under the Ontario SPCA Act with knowingly making a false report of an animal in distress to the Society. The youth pled guilty in an Ontario Court of Justice and was sentenced to a $1,130 fine.
“False complaints are taken very seriously,” says Inspector John Greer, executive director, Welland & District Humane Society, “Not only does it waste the limited resources of the Welland & District SPCA, but it also diverts needed attention away from legitimate cases of animal cruelty where animals could be suffering from serious harm or neglect.”
