23-year-old Brantford man gets jail time for animal cruelty conviction
IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Brant County, ON (March 30, 2017) – A 23-year-old Brantford man convicted of animal cruelty under the Criminal Code of Canada has been sentenced to 21 days in jail and a three-year ban on owning pets for causing unnecessary suffering to his dog.
On August 6, 2015, the Brant County SPCA received a report about a dog with injuries to its leg. An Ontario SPCA agent with the Brant County SPCA attended and observed an approximately 10-month-old Jack Russell Terrier-type dog that was not bearing weight on her front, left leg. It was alleged that the injuries were caused by the dog being kicked down the stairway.
The dog was surrendered to the Brant County SPCA and immediately received veterinary care. It was determined the dog’s leg was fractured in two places. She underwent surgery and had a plate and screws put in her leg to help heal the fractures. The dog recovered from her injuries and was adopted into a loving home.
On February 1, 2017, Christian Hamilton, 23, was found guilty in an Ontario Court of Justice for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. He was sentenced on March 27, 2017 to 21 days in jail to be served on weekends, plus probation and a three-year prohibition on owning pets. He has also been ordered to pay restitution costs to the Brant County SPCA
“Acts of animal cruelty are taken very seriously by the Ontario SPCA,” says Alison Green, Senior Inspector, Ontario SPCA. “If you harm an animal, there will be consequences under the law.”
