Middlesex County men charged with animal cruelty in large cattle investigation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Middlesex County (June 20, 2018) – Two Middlesex County men have been charged with animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act following an investigation into the neglect of cattle in their care.

The Ontario SPCA launched an investigation after receiving a concern about thin beef cattle at a farm in Middlesex County. Ontario SPCA officers executed search warrants at the property on March 6 and 7, 2018, where they discovered 37 deceased cattle in various states of decay.

Ontario SPCA officers subsequently attended three properties in the London area connected to the accused. During their investigation officers discovered six cows that were unable to rise and had not received medical attention. Five of the downed animals were euthanized by a veterinarian due to the condition in which they were found.

A 57-year-old man and 62-year-old man, both from Dorchester, have each been charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty:

  • 2 counts of permitting an animal to be in distress
  • 3 counts of failing to provide adequate and appropriate food and water
  • 9 counts of failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention
  • 1 count of failing to provide the necessary care for general welfare
  • 2 counts of failing to comply with an order

In addition, the 62-year-old man was also charged with causing an animal to be in distress.

They are due to appear in a London Provincial Offences Court on August 13, 2018.

“There is no excuse for neglect,” says Bonnie Bishop, Senior Inspector – Farm Animal Welfare, Ontario SPCA. “There will be consequences under the law if you fail to provide appropriate care for your animals or if you fail to take steps to alleviate an animal’s suffering.”

To report animal cruelty, contact the Ontario SPCA’s province-wide animal cruelty hotline at 310-SPCA (7722).
