MEDIA AND PUBLIC INVITED TO PET SAFETY DAY AS YRP PARTNERS WITH ONTARIO SPCA FOR OPERATION V.A.L.U.E.

York Regional Police Community Services has partnered with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the Toronto Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police, for a pet safety information day focused on educating the public about the dangers of leaving pets unattended inside vehicles, in the backs of pick-up trucks and proper care for animals at home.

Operation V.A.L.U.E., which stands for Vulnerable Animals Left Unattended Everyday, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 28, 2012, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., at the Vaughan Mills Mall parking lot located at 1 Bass Pro Mills Drive in the City of Vaughan. Media and the public are both invited to attend and bring along their furry friends.

Along with members of York Regional Police Community Services and Canine Units, the Ontario SPCA, Vaughan Animal Services, Toronto Animal Services and a local veterinarian will be on hand to answer questions from the public. This pet safety information day will feature shade tents, a misting tent and cooling pools for both you and your pet. The public is urged to come along and learn about the dangers and consequences of leaving animals unattended in vehicles and riding in the backs of trucks.

It is imperative that animal owners understand the hazards of leaving pets unattended inside vehicles during extreme weather conditions. Extreme heat during the summer months or cold during the winter months can result in serious health issues or death. In addition to these consequences, animal owners may find themselves facing criminal charges.

Anyone who sees an animal locked inside a vehicle during extreme weather conditions is urged to call 9-1-1.Police consider these calls emergent in nature and will respond immediately.
