Markdale Horse owner charged with four counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Markdale, ON (April 12, 2013) - On April 11, 2013, the Ontario SPCA charged a Markdale woman with four counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act.

The charges are as follows:
•    One count for causing distress to an animal;
•    One count for failing to comply with an Order;
•    Two counts for failing to provide standards of care as outline under the Ontario SPCA Act.

Since February 2013 the Ontario SPCA has been diligently working with an Owner to try to provide care for the horses on the property. The horses were placed under veterinary care and Orders were issued while the investigation continued.

The Ontario SPCA’s first approach when investigating concerns for an animal’s welfare is to lead with education when possible. This protocol was followed with the owner until such time as it became necessary to enforce the law so that the horses received the required care.

“If providing for an animal in your care becomes difficult, it’s important to take the appropriate steps to ensure that the animal’s health isn’t compromised” says Senior Inspector Darren Grandel. “Contact your local Ontario SPCA or Veterinarian to see what options are available.”

“Although there are rising concerns for the welfare of the horses from the racing industry, there are also concerns for the lack of feed existing due to dry 2012 summer,” says Connie Mallory, Chief Inspector, Ontario SPCA.  “Together, with agencies, animal welfare organization, and horse lovers alike, we are working to help ensure that all animals in Ontario receive the care they require and that no animal will be left to suffer.”

We want to remind animal owners that if you have concerns for the welfare of your animal there are alternatives other than allowing an animal to go without adequate care. Contact your local Ontario SPCA to discuss what services are available. To report cruelty please call 1-888-668-7722 or email your concern tocruelty@ospca.on.ca.
