Brantford couple charged after 40 snakes and five eggs were found in several cramped bins

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - BRANTFORD, ON (August 23, 2013) – On August 20, 2013, a Brantford man and woman were charged with three counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act after 40 ball python snakes and five eggs were found in several containers at a Brantford property.

The charges included:
• Causing distress to an animal;
• Failing to provide care necessary for an animal’s general welfare;
• Failing to provide adequate and appropriate water;

On August 15, 2013, the Brant County SPCA was contacted by Brantford City Police following the discovery of several bins containing a large number of snakes, ranging from 1 foot to 4.5 feet in length. The owners of the snakes were not present.

The snakes were found without water and housed without adequate space. Upon veterinarian consultation, the reptiles were removed by the Brant County SPCA and taken to a facility to be cared for. Further examination revealed that the snakes were dehydrated.

Investigators later found the owners, who decided to surrender the reptiles as well as five eggs to the Brant County SPCA.

“If providing for animals in your care becomes difficult, it’s important to take the appropriate steps to ensure that the animal’s health isn’t compromised,” says Darren Grandel, Senior Inspector. “Contact your local Ontario SPCA or veterinarian to see what options are available.”

The Ontario SPCA reminds pet owners that if you have concerns for the welfare of your animal there are other alternatives than allowing an animal to go without adequate care. Contact your local Ontario SPCA and we can discuss what services are available. To report cruelty please call 1-888-668-7722 or email your concern to cruelty@ospca.on.ca.
