When accident or illness strikes – how will you protect your pet?

The pandemic has been a struggle for many people, and the pets they love. In addition to facing challenges finding the money to buy food for their animals, unexpected medical bills have also wreaked havoc on the finances of many families.

From April 2020 the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s 310-SPCA support line received an average of 700 calls per month. Many of which were related to companion animal care. Moreover, the estimated cost of treatment for each of these cases was anywhere between $200 to $10,000 each.

During a seven-month period, we received requests for dental extractions and surgery totalling approximately $70,000.  General examinations and diagnostics requests relating to wounds and injuries totalling about $58,100. As well as, requests for surgery (growths, tumors, orthopedics) totalling an estimated $160,000.

Certainly, dealing with unexpected significant medical costs is a stressful situation at any time that no one ever wants to be faced with.

Pet parents in these situations who don’t have the means to provide the emergency care their companion animal needs turn to other resources. For example, The Farley Foundation, which helps low-income pet owners in Ontario by subsidizing the cost of non-elective animal medical care for their sick or injured pets. Some are able to work out payment plans with their pet’s doctor. In addition, the Ontario SPCA’s Urgent Animal Care Fund has also been able to provide assistance with some of these cases.

Now, more than ever, it’s important for pet parents to have an emergency plan in place for the care of their pets. This can include investing in a pet insurance plan. Having a way to proactively prepare for unexpected costs can make all the difference.

Protecting your rescued pet with insurance allows you to fulfill your promise to them – in exchange for unconditional love, you’ll safeguard their well-being.
