Remember, the best practices are:
- Reinforce what you want
- Ignore what you don’t want
Animals will act in ways that they’ve learned are successful in gaining them good experiences and helping them avoid bad experiences. Behaviour that is rewarded is going to be repeated.
Training requires patience, focus, and consistency. It is important to recognize the desirable or undesirable behaviour promptly and provide appropriate and immediate feedback to the animal. This is where we often go wrong….unknowingly rewarding the undesired behaviour, or not rewarding the desired behaviour when it happens.
Timing is everything! Be quick and generous with your reward!
