Explore volunteer opportunities at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre

by | Interesting |

If you’re passionate about animals and eager to make a difference in the lives of animals, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre in Peterborough offers a range of fulfilling volunteer opportunities. This specialized facility has been custom built to help dogs who need more individualized care than a typical animal centre can provide to help them get adopted.

Here’s a look at how you can get involved and make an impact.

A day in the life of a volunteer

Volunteers at the Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre play a crucial role in the daily operations of the facility. Whether it’s walking dogs, engaging in enrichment activities, or providing essential support to the staff, there’s a role for everyone.

“I do a variety of things depending on what would be most helpful that day,” says Anne McCarthy, who has been a dedicated volunteer since the summer of 2023. “Sometimes I take dogs for walks or hang out and play in the yard. Other times, I help with dishes, laundry, or build enrichment puzzles for the dogs.”

Anne’s volunteer experience

Anne’s journey with the Ontario SPCA began during her dog training certification course. “I was part way into my dog training certification when I learned about the Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre. I thought it would be a perfect place to get hands-on experience and help dogs looking for forever homes,” Anne says.

One of Anne’s favorite aspects of volunteering is receiving updates about adopted dogs. “It’s so rewarding to hear how well the dogs are doing and to see that they’ve found loving families. Those updates make all the hard work worthwhile.”

Why you should volunteer

Anne wholeheartedly recommends volunteering at the Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre. “The rehab centre is a wonderful place with fantastic staff,” she says. “Each dog is there because they need a bit of extra help, and it’s very rewarding to be part of their journey. Even if you can only spare a little time, your efforts make a big difference.”
