From loss to love: turning grief into a commitment to help animals in need

by | Interesting |

Whitney adopted a senior black lab named Misty from the Ontario SPCA York Region Animal Centre. She knew when they met that she wanted to give Misty a loving home to live out her golden years.

When Whitney first met Misty, she was told the adoption fee would be waived because Misty was a senior dog who was being passed over by adopters. This inspired Whitney to share her love for Misty by becoming a monthly donor to the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. She signed up the same day she adopted Misty.

A life filled with love

Misty and Whitney enjoyed a beautiful life together. Whitney says she loved celebrating Misty’s half-birthday every six months since she didn’t know how much time they had left together. Misty was obsessed with her toys and had an overflowing toy box with over 40 toys.

Misty brought so much joy to Whitney’s life, but sadly, Misty passed away in March 2023 in her doggie bed surrounded by all her favourite toys. Whitney was so grateful that she was able to give Misty a loving home in her later years.

Loss to love

Whitney was heartbroken when Misty passed and didn’t know what to do. The only thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to do something to honour Misty’s memory. So, she added a second monthly gift to her donation to help other animals like Misty find a loving home.

Soft spot for seniors

Whitney’s love for senior animals reached many other furry friends than just Misty. She had previously adopted another senior dog named Millie from the Ontario SPCA as well. Millie was a senior and needed palliative care. Whitney and her family gave Millie eight months of love and care before she passed away under her favorite willow tree in their backyard, with Millie’s veterinarian by her side.

Whitney also had a senior diabetic cat named Skittles who was 17 years old. Unfortunately, Skittles passed away right after Misty in 2023.

A lasting impact

Whitney’s monthly gift to the Ontario SPCA has been life-changing for animals in need. Her generosity has helped provide the care and support that animals require to live happy and healthy lives.
