Tips for paw-sitive walks
by Ontario SPCA and Humane Society | Dog Care General Pet Care | September 19, 2024
Some dogs may be eager for their daily walks, while others may not be as thrilled, especially during the warmer months. Walking is great exercise for your pup and provides great bonding time for the two of you. To make the experience more enjoyable for your furry friend, follow our dog walking tips below.
Choose your time wisely
Make sure you choose the right time to go for a walk with your dog, especially in the summertime. Consider walking in the morning or the evening to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Also consider avoiding rush hour times if you are in an area near busier roadways to prevent traffic fear.
Bring the right equipment
A properly fitting harness and collar can ensure the walk is enjoyable for your pup, preventing shifting and movement which can be uncomfortable and pull on their fur. Bringing a water dish and some water in a bottle for breaks on hot days or long walks can ensure your furry friend is staying hydrated and comfortable.
Take time to explore
Rather than viewing walking the dog as a chore, take the time to explore on your walks. Is there a new route you haven’t taken before? Does your dog prefer a certain route for the different smells? Can you walk with a friend who has a dog? View the outing as an enjoyable hobby rather than an item to check off your list and literally “stop to smell the roses.”
Seize the training opportunity
In your bag, pack some treats for the walk and get in some training. Changing the scenery of their usual training can provide more of a challenge to focus on the cue at hand. Practicing on your walks helps them master their focus while surrounded by distractions.
Regular walks are a great way to provide enrichment and exercise for your dog. By considering factors such as time of day and proper equipment, you can help make walks something your dog looks forward to. They also create a bonding opportunity for you and your furry friend!
