IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cornwall, ON (February 16, 2024) – The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is thrilled to unleash some paws-itively delightful news: it has fetched two acres of land in the city of Cornwall for a new animal centre. This tail-wagging new building will be on Second Street West, just a hop, skip, and a bark away from the soccer fields.

This fur-tastic new facility will not only serve the City of Cornwall, but also the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne (SDGCA), and the United Counties of Prescott and Russell communities.

For 35 years, the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SD&G) Animal Centre has been an essential resource for furry friends in the community. The current facility has been facing many challenges, including limited space and lack of outdoor runs. This acquisition is one way the Society is showing its commitment to quality animal care and living space, and animal welfare services needed in the community.

“We want to continue to keep pets and people together and provide comfort and compassion to animals in need,” says Carol Link, Manager of the Ontario SPCA SD&G Animal Centre. “This is a big step forward in our commitment to help animals and serve the growing community.”

“The City of Cornwall is pleased to have supported this project via our Brownfields Program,” said Mayor Justin Towndale. “We look forward to the expansion of the OSPCA to better serve the residents of Cornwall, SD&G, and Akwesasne.”

“We want to thank the City of Cornwall, our community supporters, and our staff and volunteers,” says Doug Brooks, President and CEO of the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “We are excited to continue working together to provide the best possible support for the animals and those who care for them.”

The planning and research phases for the new build have begun, and the Society will share updates with the public as the project develops.
