The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is actively responding to the wildfire emergency across Northern Ontario. We are working closely with the Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response, as well as local Northern rescues, to provide support to families who have evacuated with their pets.

Here is how we are helping:

  • Emergency food: So far, we have distributed approximately 75 pallets of dog food through our hubs in Thunder Bay, reaching evacuated families and affected communities, including First Nations.
  • Emergency supplies: Crates, leashes, collars, harnesses, bowls, and other essentials are being provided to families arriving at evacuation centres and host communities with little more than the pets in their arms.
  • Animal transport: We are moving our adoptable animals south to our other animal centres to make space for temporary housing of displaced pets in our Northwest Animal Centre.
  • Emergency boarding: Our Northwest Animal Centre is providing temporary shelter for animals while their families get settled.
  • Wildfire telehealth for pets: Available to pet parents and emergency responders day or night. We are also providing vaccinations and basic medical care to help keep evacuated animals healthy.

As part of our public awareness efforts, we continue to share information across our social media channels on keeping pets safe during periods of extreme heat and protecting them from wildfire smoke. You can learn more on our blog: Protecting Pets from Wildfire Smoke: What You Need to Know

If you would like to help, the best way is to donate to our Emergency Response Fund. Your gift will help us continue providing food, supplies, veterinary care, and emergency boarding to pets and the families who love them. Every donation makes a difference.
