More than 1,000 reasons to celebrate
National Volunteer Week takes place April 19-25 and this year is extra special for the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. Not only are we marking a week of gratitude for every person who gives their time to help animals in need, but we’re celebrating a major milestone: welcoming our 1,000th volunteer in 2026.
That number represents more than a headcount. It represents more than 1,000 people who have walked dogs, bottle-fed orphaned kittens, driven animals to veterinary appointments, opened their homes to animals who needed extra TLC, and so much more!
Why volunteers matter so much
As a registered charity funded entirely by donors, the Ontario SPCA relies on the generosity of supporters, the strength of community partnerships, and the dedication of volunteers. Together, they help thousands of animals find loving homes each year and ensure animals across Ontario can stay with the families who love them.
From animal centres to outreach programs, volunteers are woven into every corner of our mission. Their time, compassion, and dedication are what make it possible for us to deliver care across the province.
The many ways you can help
Volunteering with the Ontario SPCA looks different for everyone. Whether you have a few hours a week or can open your home to an animal in need, there’s a place for you in our volunteer family.
Volunteer needs vary by location and season, so opportunities are updated regularly. Visit ontariospca.ca/volunteer to see what’s available near you.
Our greatest need: Foster volunteers
One of our most urgent needs is for foster volunteers, especially those willing to care for kittens who need bottle feeding, and pregnant dogs with pups. The foster program benefits animals who are not ready for adoption and are either too young, sick, injured, under-socialized or stressed to thrive in a busy animal centre environment.
Foster volunteers are supported every step of the way. You will receive online training, comprehensive manuals, resources, and hands-on guidance from our team. You don’t need prior veterinary experience; just a willingness to learn, reliable transportation, time for socialization and health monitoring, and a separate space in your home to keep foster animals safe and comfortable.
Volunteers are the heart of our organization. If you’re passionate about animals and want to make a difference in your community, visit ontariospca.ca/volunteer to learn more and apply.
