Give a dog a day out and change their future
What if changing a dog’s life didn’t require a long-term commitment?
With the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s new Dog’s Day Out program, it doesn’t. In fact, all it takes is a few hours.
Dog’s Day Out is a new pilot program at the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society York Region Animal Centre that gives shelter dogs the chance to spend time outside the animal centre with members of the community. Whether it’s a walk through a local trail, a visit to a dog-friendly café, or simply relaxing at home, these outings offer dogs a chance to enjoy a day outside a shelter environment, where they can be themselves.
And that can make all the difference.
Why a day out matters
Life in a shelter can be stressful, even with the best care. New environments, unfamiliar sounds, and the busy pace of shelter life can make it difficult for dogs to fully relax or show their true personalities. Time outside the animal centre provides:
- Mental stimulation and enrichment
- A break from kennel stress
- Opportunities to observe a dog’s behaviour and personality in real-world settings
- A chance for dogs to connect with people in a more natural way
Sometimes, a dog who seems shy or high energy in the shelter transforms completely outside a shelter setting. They relax, play and show who they really are. Organizations with similar programs have seen dogs get adopted faster, sometimes shortening their stay by up to two weeks.
A simple way to make a real impact
Not everyone is in a position to adopt or foster. Dog’s Day Out was designed with that in mind.
This program offers a flexible, low-commitment way for animal lovers to make a meaningful difference. You don’t need to take a dog home long-term. You don’t need prior experience. You just need a few hours and a willingness to help.
Helping dogs get noticed
One of the most powerful parts of Dog’s Day Out is what happens after the outing.
Participants are encouraged to share photos, videos, and stories from their day on social media. These real-life glimpses help showcase each dog’s personality in a way that adoption profiles alone can’t always capture.
A photo of a dog curled up on a couch, playing in the sun, or walking confidently through a neighbourhood can spark a connection, and that connection can lead to adoption.

Who can participate?
Participants must be at least 18 years old to take a dog out independently, though families are welcome to join in the experience. All participants must complete a short application and orientation in advance to ensure a safe and successful match.
Dogs are also carefully selected based on their temperament and readiness for outings. The program is designed to set both dogs and participants up for success.
If you’re approved to participate, we will match you with a dog suited to your experience and lifestyle.
From there, everything is taken care of:
- You’ll receive a backpack with all the essentials, including a leash, treats, toys, and a water bottle
- You’ll get guidance on your dog’s personality, energy level, and needs
- You’ll have access to support throughout your outing
Your role is simple: spend time together.
One day can change everything
Every dog deserves the chance to feel comfortable, explore, and to be seen for who they are. Dog’s Day Out makes that possible, one outing at a time.
