Take a dog on a field trip
Welcome to Dog’s Day Out!
Dog’s Day Out gives our pups a much-needed break from shelter life while helping them shine in front of potential adopters. Outfitted in an “Adopt Me” vest, they’ll explore dog-friendly spots, meet new friends, and show off their personalities.
It’s fun, flexible, and a meaningful way to help a shelter dog get one step closer to their forever home.
We are proud to be a Fear Free shelter. All dog handling during outings should be rooted in positive reinforcement, compassionate, and non-forceful techniques. To learn more, visit fearfreepets.org
What to expect
- Dogs are typically 40–65 lbs.
- Dogs are chosen based on who needs a break the most.
- We’ll provide a backpack with supplies for your adventure.

FAQs
What if all the spots are full?
Check back often! Our appointments and availability will change weekly. If all eligible dogs have had outings, you’re still welcome to visit and see our adoptable animals.
What should I bring with me?
We will provide a backpack full of supplies to accompany your pup! Your backpack will include an info card with an emergency phone number, a map with a list of recommended destinations, a water bottle, a water bowl, a towel, toys, treats, poop bags, an “Adopt Me” vest, and a doggy seatbelt.
Can children participate?
Yes, children are welcome to join the outings. We ask that this be noted on your registration, and adults 18 years and older remain the dog’s handlers throughout the day.
Can I bring my own dog on an outing?
We ask that your Dog’s Day Out companion be the only dog on your field trip. Dog-to-dog interactions are not permitted on field trips.
Can I request a specific size or breed of dog?
The majority of our field trip dogs are medium to large-sized and may be strong. Due to the constant flux of dogs in and out of the centres, we cannot fulfil requests to be paired with a dog that excludes specific breeds or sizes.
Where can we go with our dog?
The community map we provide will give you a mix of fun and relaxing ideas of where you can take your dog. You may choose to take your dog out to lunch at one of our dog-friendly local restaurants that offer outdoor seating and shade, a hike, or just snooze under a tree at a local park!
Who do I call if I have any questions when I am out with my dog?
For emergencies, please call INSERT HERE. Our animal centre team will review all protocols prior to you leaving for your field trip.

Please note:
Due to our location, all participants require access to a vehicle.
We cannot fulfil requests to be paired with a dog that excludes specific breeds, energy levels, or sizes.
If you’re not comfortable handling a large, energetic, or strong dog, this particular program may not be the right fit for you – and that’s completely okay. The safety and well-being of our dogs and participants are our top priority.
You’re still welcome to stop by the animal centre, walk through, and spend time visiting our other wonderful, adoptable animals. We’d love to see you and help you find a great match!
