Sonya Reichel, VP, Shelter Operations
Sonya is a dedicated advocate for animal welfare with over 16 years of experience in the non-profit sector. Growing up in London, Ontario, surrounded by horses, dogs, and cats, her passion for animals blossomed early on. At 14, she embarked on her journey in animal welfare, starting at the SARI therapeutic riding centre for individuals with disabilities.
After earning her degree in Animal Sciences from the University of Guelph, Sonya spent four impactful years in British Columbia, honing her skills in animal welfare before returning to Ontario to join the Georgian Triangle Humane Society in 2012 as their Executive Director. Her commitment and contributions to the field were recognized in 2018 when she was awarded the prestigious Ontario SPCA Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare.
In 2024, Sonya joined the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society leadership team. Her expertise lies in strategic planning, leadership, fundraising, and change management, all aimed at creating humane and healthy communities.
When not championing animal welfare, Sonya finds solace at her cabin on the Bruce Peninsula or exploring the great outdoors around Collingwood with her family, including her two cats and German Shepherd.
