Why does my dog scoot on the carpet?

Did you know, dogs of all sizes, ages and breeds can have issues with their anal glands? In this second installment of our Ask The Vet series, we’re answering another common question: why does my dog scoot his rear end on the ground?

Possible reasons for issues with anal glands

Here are a few possible reasons why your dog could be experiencing issues with their anal glands:

  • Changes to poop consistency:
    • Certain medications
    • Recent diet change
    • New treats
    • Worms
  • Food allergies
  • Obesity
  • Over-expressing anal glands that don’t need to be expressed
