Guidelines for visiting National Parks with your dog this summer

by | Dog Care Interesting |

Looking for a fun activity to do this summer? Take advantage of the beautiful Canadian National Parks*! With five National Parks in Ontario, you have lots of adventures to choose from with your family and furry friends. Visiting a park is a fantastic way to get outside, enjoy nature and get some exercise. Be sure to always check if dogs are allowed at the park you want to visit!

Visiting National Parks with your dog

It is always a good idea to be prepared before heading out to visit these parks. Here are some things Parks Canada suggests keeping in mind:

  • Most parks require you to always keep your dog on a leash. The leash should be three meters or less. This will protect you, your dog, the public, and the wildlife in the park.
  • Always pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste in the correct garbage bins to ensure cleanliness and safety of the park.
  • Give wildlife the space they need, since dogs can disturb or injure small animals and species at risk.
  • You are responsible for your dog and must ensure they do not attack or chase a person, animal, or vehicle while in the park. To ensure everyone has a good weekend – including you and your dog – keep them on a leash and always keep an eye on them.
  • As the owner of your dog, you know what their abilities are, so Parks Canada suggests picking suitable activities and terrains that align with those abilities.
  • Finally, Parks Canada recommends checking for area closures, trail restrictions and updates on wildlife activity before visiting any of the parks. You can find this information by visiting the park website or the visitor centre.

Speaking for the ones who can’t speak for themselves

Keep up the good work speaking for the ones who can’t speak for themselves. A society who cares for their animals is a better society.  Thanks for your good work!
