Providing care for animals across Ontario
With 12 animal centres located across the province, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society aims to provide care, comfort and compassion to animals in need across Ontario.
In addition to finding loving homes for animals, the Ontario SPCA strives to keep pets and families together and does so through a variety of community support services, including emergency sheltering, pet food distribution, humane education, and spay/neuter and wellness services.

Adoptions
A cornerstone of our work is our adoption program, where we strive to find loving homes for animals in need, no matter how long it takes. We found loving homes for over 4,500 animals in 2024! Whether it’s a playful puppy or a calm senior cat, we carefully match pets with families to ensure a lifetime of happiness for both. Animals adopted from the Ontario SPCA are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and they go home with food from Royal Canin to help ensure a smooth transition into their new home.

Emergency sheltering
When pet parents face unexpected challenges, our emergency sheltering services provide a safe space for animals with nowhere else to go. We offer temporary care until families can reunite with their pets, ensuring their safety during difficult times.
Feral cat management
The Ontario SPCA’s feral cat support programs assist feral cat caretakers in managing their colonies. In addition to its food bank and shelters for feral cats, the Ontario SPCA operates a feral cat trap depot program where the Society loans cat traps to feral cat caretakers at no charge in an effort to trap, neuter, vaccinate and return feral cats to their managed colony and stabilize their population. This approach is the only economically viable and truly humane approach to feral cat population stabilization.

Animal transfers
When a request for support comes in, the Ontario SPCA does what it can to change the lives of those animals. A lack of access to basic animal wellness services, such as veterinarians and spay/neuter services, has contributed to an increase in animal populations, particularly in Northern Canada. The Ontario SPCA works together with communities to transfer animals to areas of the province where there are families waiting to adopt. We also support community led sustainable solutions to animal management and health to address the root causes of animal overpopulation.
Food distribution
No one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets. The Ontario SPCA works with food banks and community partners to distribute pet food where it’s needed most. Whether it’s helping families who are experiencing hardship, or supporting communities enduring challenges such as natural disasters, we help ensure furry bellies are full.
Humane education
Education is one of the most important ways we can improve the lives of animals. Through the Ontario SPCA’s AnimalSmart™ humane education program, our goal is to foster empathy, promote responsibility and inspire a connection with animals.
AnimalSmart™ presentations are offered free to Grades 1-8 in our animal centre communities and take a student-centred approach, aiming to foster meaningful conversations about animals through discussions, videos and activities with curriculum connections.

Animal advocacy
The Ontario SPCA serves as a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves through its advocacy efforts. Learn about some of the things we’ve been working on, including the Preventing Unethical Puppy Sales Act (PUPS Act), which has passed its final vote at Queen’s Park! This new law is an important step towards protecting dogs and the public from unscrupulous breeders operating puppy mills. Read our PUPS Act update!

Spay/neuter and wellness services
A lack of access to basic animal wellness services, such as veterinarians and spay/neuter services, has contributed to an increase in animal populations. The Ontario SPCA offers high-volume spay/neuter services to the public at its Ontario SPCA Centre Veterinary Hospital in Stouffville, and its Marion Vernon Memorial Clinic in Barrie.
In addition, our SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit, made possible thanks to a Pet Valu Companions for Change™ sponsorship, is currently stationed in Sudbury to provide spay/neuter and wellness services to Northern communities. We also host MASH-style clinics in underserved communities. These pop-up style spay/neuter and wellness clinics can be transported to where they are needed most, including remote communities.

Wellness clinics
The Ontario SPCA offers wellness clinics in York Region and Barrie for families without the means to take their animal to a local veterinarian for routine care. Located within the Ontario SPCA Centre Veterinary Hospital in Stouffville, and the Marion Vernon Memorial Clinic in Barrie, the wellness clinics provide preventative care to animals who do not currently receive veterinary care.
We want to reach those who may be struggling to provide care to their furry family members. The clinics will provide general wellness examinations, vaccinations and, when necessary and requested by the family, end-of-life care. Animals requiring additional care will be referred to a local veterinarian for treatment.
