A Legacy of healing hearts – Catherine’s story
When Tracy Schneider Dauner and her husband hired Catherine McCormick, their life changed.
They knew Catherine, at that time 80 years old and recently retired, would be a terriffc employee at their small motel, but they had no idea they’d become close friends. In fact, they spent so much time together that Tracy’s young sons thought of Catherine as a third grandmother.
Catherine had always loved animals. Her two cats were her best buddies. Sadly, people would sometimes abandon animals at the motel, but Catherine would feed them and bring them to her local animal centre to find them a home. One time, she even saved a chicken from a busy road! With Tracy’s help, Catherine herded the chicken into a nearby field until the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society arrived to help.
When Catherine suffered a massive stroke, Tracy discovered that her friend had found a way to keep saving animals: Catherine had made a gift to the Ontario SPCA in her will. The discovery touched Tracy’s heart. She knew Catherine loved supporting animal charities, and she also knew that the Ontario SPCA was just the place to continue her friend’s legacy.
Through a gift in your will that honours someone you cherish, the values you’ve lived all your life – like compassion and kindness for animals – will carry on, long after your gone.
