A lifelong love of animals lives on through memorial golf tournament

Sue Lane was a caring woman who had a special place in her heart for animals. Although Sue sadly passed away seven years ago, her love of animals lives on thanks to her son, Greg Lane.

“Sue was one in a million,” says Greg. “She was honest and hardworking, as well as a devoted mother and supportive sister.”

It was during Sue’s final days that Greg presented his mother with the idea of hosting a golf tournament in her memory. Sue was honoured by this idea, and when asked which charity she would like the event proceeds to be given to, she immediately replied “give it to the animals.”

Greg promptly began planning the first annual Sue Lane Memorial Golf Tournament. He chose the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society to receive the funds raised, in accordance with his mother’s wishes.

“The Sue Lane Memorial Golf Tournament is a chance for people to remember what a wonderful and caring person she was,” adds Greg.

Over $20,000 donated in Sue’s memory

Years later, Greg celebrates the completion of the seventh annual Sue Lane Memorial Golf Tournament. The 2023 tournament marked the most successful event yet, with an impressive $5,220 raised. To date, Greg has donated over $20,000 to the Ontario SPCA in memory of his mother.

“My mother’s legacy carries on through myself, my wife Alex, and our two children Ziggy and Leni,” says Greg. The family shares Sue’s love of animals and has two animals they adore; a four-year-old cat named Edith and a six-year-old dog named Wesley.

Greg hopes to one day pass on the Sue Lane Memorial Golf Tournament to his children so that they can continue supporting the Ontario SPCA in their grandmother’s memory.
