Beau: From tragedy to triumph
Last fall, a sweet pup named Beau came into our care after being hit by a car. He needed critical surgery and intensive rehabilitation. Thanks to our generous supporters, he received the necessary medical care he needed to go on to live a happy, healthy life.
For a while, things were looking up for him. However, an unexpected complication arose, and Beau’s previously injured leg bone shifted, requiring the amputation of his leg in December. Despite this setback, Beau is now healing well and adjusting wonderfully to life as a tripod.
We are thrilled to share an update from his new adopter, Kaity Hogan, about Beau’s progress and new life.
Adopting Beau: A new beginning
Kaity and her family were immediately drawn to Beau when they saw his profile on the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society website.
“My husband grew up with German Shepherds, and we had been looking for a while to add a new addition to our family,” Kaity explains. “When we saw Beau, we fell in love instantly. Our cat is also an amputee, and I think that really drew us in when we saw Beau’s profile.”
Their household includes one other furry friend, a tortoiseshell cat named Izzy. Kaity notes that Beau has been adjusting very well to his new life, especially with the two young children in the home. “Beau is excellent with them,” she says, highlighting his gentle and loving nature.
Like any transition, Beau faced some initial challenges in his new environment. “His first day and night at home, he was scared to go on the hardwood flooring in our house. He did not move from our large area rug in the living room, even sleeping there,” Kaity says.
With patience and encouragement, Beau quickly adapted. “The second night, I carried him to our room and put him on his bed. We got him to walk back and forth from our room to the living room with treats, and he slowly made his way. During the night, we heard him up and walking all over the hardwood flooring in our hallway.”
Beau’s favourite activity is playing outside with his frisbee. As a German Shepherd-Border Collie mix, his energy and enthusiasm are evident. Beau has developed a special bond with Kaity.
Kaity says, “He loves ‘mom.’ He is always by my side. When I get up, so does he. When I sit down, his head is plopped on my lap. When I go to bed, he’s right beside me.”
Beau’s journey from tragedy to triumph is a testament to the power of community and compassion. The cost for Beau’s additional surgery was just over $1,600, and thanks to our generous donors, his expenses were fully covered. Beau serves as a wonderful example of how your donations have a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.
