Essential Oils: Are they bad to have around your pets?
by Ontario SPCA and Humane Society | General Pet Care | January 26, 2018
Essential oils have been a pretty hot topic in the news recently, along with posts wondering about the dangers they pose to pets. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) wanted to shed some light on this trending topic, so they posted an article of their own.
Here are some helpful tips from their post, Is the Latest Home Trend Harmful to Your Pets? What You Need to Know!
Are essential oils potentially harmful for your pets? And if so, what precautions should pet parents be taking?
The ASPCA says the answer is more complicated than “yes” or “no.” They say when 100% concentrated, essential oils can be a danger for pets. If pets walk through oils, get them on their coat, or have oils placed directly on them, these are the potential symptoms:
- Unsteadiness on the feet
- Depression
- Low body temperature (in severe cases)
However, the ASPCA adds if a pet ingested concentrated essential oils, symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea and depression.
The rest of the ASPCA’s article answers the questions, are some oils/scents for dangerous than others? And, does that mean you should return your diffuser? Check out the full article here.
