Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Time to haul out the green and festive gear for a more-exciting-than-normal Thursday!
If your furry friends are going to be around for the festivities, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.
St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips
- Decorations: If there’s any green tinsel or ribbon around, be sure to keep that away from your companion animals. Cats and dogs are attracted to items like these and, if swallowed, it could cause harm to your furry friends.
- Celebrations: On St. Patrick’s Day many people enjoy chocolate, food and often alcoholic beverages. Please be mindful that these can be harmful to your furry friends. Be sure to set your food and drinks where Fluffy and Fido can’t get to them. Read 10 foods that are harmful to dogs and 8 foods that are harmful to cats.
- Patty Costumes: Today is not the day for your dog to try on their St. Patrick’s Day costume for the first time. If you are thinking of dressing up your animal, you need to make sure they are going to be comfortable and that the costume won’t be too tight, or too loose and catch on their feet as they walk. If you haven’t prepared in advance – save the costume for next year! Read more tips for costume safety and your animals.
- Keep animals away from party scenes: If you’re having a party in your house, you may not be able to monitor where your furry friend is and what food or drink others may be giving them. Find a quiet place for your companion animals away from the noise where they can feel safe. As well, if you know you live near bars or pubs where there will be a lot of activity, consider re-routing your walk for a quieter and safer environment.
With these tips, you and your furry friends can have a safe and fun St. Patrick’s Day!

I stand behind SPCA with my monthly gift. I am so happy there are folks like you to care for those who can’t help themselves. My family and I have had animals all our lives and know what a comfort they are. Thank you SPCA.
