Ontario SPCA and Humane Society mobile spay/neuter unit rolls into Cornwall
Cornwall, ON (Oct. 20, 2020) – The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is bringing their mobile animal wellness unit to Cornwall this week for a spay/neuter clinic for underserved pet families as part of the city’s efforts to reduce cat overpopulation.
Funded by the City of Cornwall, the 38-foot SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services Unit will be providing spay/neuter surgeries from Oct. 21-23 to those who would not have been able to access the service without the support of the city subsidy. A total of 75 appointments for cats were pre-booked in advance through the city’s spay/neuter program.
The event marks the first of two upcoming spay/neuter events, with a second event scheduled for Nov. 4-6. All 75 appointment spots have already been filled for that event.
“Spaying and neutering is a critical element in any successful community animal management strategy,” says Daryl Vaillancourt, Chief, Humane Programs & Community Outreach, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “We celebrate the City of Cornwall for their ongoing community animal management efforts and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.”
After careful consideration and research to determine the safest way to resume mobile spay/neuter services during COVID-19, the Ontario SPCA has resumed operations with new limited contact procedures in place. Animals are picked up and dropped off in a safe curbside process overseen by staff at all times.
Thanks to a grant provided by the Pet Valu family of stores through its Giving Back Project, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society launched its SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services Unit last year to deliver wellness examinations and spay/neuter services to underserved communities. To date, over 500 spay/neuter procedures have been performed, preventing more than an estimated 16,000 potentially unwanted kittens and puppies.
