Ontario SPCA launches contest to name foal in its care
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Stouffville, ON (August 23, 2017) – The Ontario SPCA has launched a contest asking members of the public to trot out their best horse names to help name a foal that was born in its care. A Quarter Horse-cross, now named “Dee,” came into the care of the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre in March through an investigation. A routine veterinary examination revealed the mare was in foal. Her baby – a healthy colt – was born last month and he now needs a name. To participate in the contest to name the foal, visit ontariospca.ca/horses and include your choice for the baby’s name. You could win an Ontario SPCA prize pack, including a “Velvet the horse” plush collectable, and a $100 gift card to Greenhawk Harness & Equestrian Supplies. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2017. The Ontario SPCA is well known in communities across Ontario for the work it does to help cats and dogs in need, but horses and ponies also end up in the care of the Society. In fact, 20 horses were adopted into new homes through the Ontario SPCA in 2016 alone. Many of the horses are surrendered because their owners can no longer care for them, while others – like Dee – come into the care of the Ontario SPCA through cruelty investigations. Big and small, young and old, and of various breeds and abilities, they all share one thing in common – they’re waiting for a loving home and have so much to offer their new families. “We’re very excited to be giving horse enthusiasts the opportunity to name this colt,” says Tonya Martin, Director, Animal Centres & Humane Programming, Ontario SPCA. “It’s not often that foals are born in our care and we wanted to do something fun to give the public the chance to celebrate this healthy, happy baby boy with us.” Once the foal is old enough to be weaned from his mother he will be placed up for adoption.
