Pembroke man facing Criminal Code animal cruelty charges after striking cow with ice chopper
IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Pembroke, ON (June 19, 2017) – A 35-year-old Pembroke man has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty under the Criminal Code of Canada following an investigation into his treatment of a dairy cow. On February 7, 2017, an Ontario SPCA officer attended a farm in Pembroke after receiving a concern about a Holstein-type dairy cow in distress. They found a cow suffering from an injury to its hind leg caused by multiple blows with an ice chopper. The accused allegedly kicked the cow multiple times in the stomach when it attempted to kick while being milked. He then struck the cow in the leg multiple times with a large iron ice chopper, causing a visible injury. When the cow kicked out again, he struck the cow in the same place on the leg again, causing further injury. The cow was examined by a veterinarian and treated for its injuries. The accused faces one count of willfully causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal and one count of wilfully wounding or injuring an animal. He will appear in an Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on June 20, 2017. “Acts of animal cruelty are unacceptable and taken very seriously by the Ontario SPCA,” says Lynn Michaud, Senior Inspector, Ontario SPCA. “If you harm an animal, you will be held accountable.” To report animal cruelty or neglect, call 310-SPCA (7722) immediately. ## MEDIA CONTACT Kallie Milleman Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre firstname.lastname@example.org Ontario SPCA and Humane Society: Protecting animals since 1873, Ontario SPCA is Ontario’s Animal Welfare organization.
